Also known as
Piano Hinges,
Continuous Hinges are composed of two continuous leaves of material.
These hinges are available in standard lengths of 1.8 meters and vary in
width from 13 mm to 150mm. They find application in a wide variety of
doors and have several advantages over other types of hinges. These
hinges are available in various shapes and sizes. Customized designs are
also available for continuous hinges.

Continuous hinges have become a much broader band of door hardware
today, covering hinges from 0.5mm thick material for trinket boxes to
5mm thick for use on blast doors.
Materials Used
A wide range of materials are used for making continuous or piano
hinges. Some of the materials used include:
- Stainless Steel
- Brass
- Aluminium
- Iron
Salient Features
- Brass and stainless steel pins are provided with most piano
hinges.
- For most piano hinges, the length is a multiple of knuckle length
so as to ensure free rotation of the pin.
Advantages of Continuous Hinges
Continuous hinge is also sometimes referred as long narrow butt hinge.
They have some advantages over using several shorter butt hinges. These
hinges can be cut down in order to match the full length of the door or
lid to be hinged. These hinges provide support along the entire length
of the door thereby keeping the door and frame in perfect alignment.
Another added advantage of continuous hinges is that they evenly
distribute the load over the whole length of the door aperture. Another
advantage of continuous hinge is that they are also suitable for
applications like furniture manufacturing, security cabinets, metal
fabrications, etc.
Finishes
The finishes available for continuous hinges are varied. Plated finish
is very popular among continuous hinges. Apart from this, satin chrome
finish, polished brass finish and antique finishes are also popular in
continuous hinges.
