Door Hinges History
Can any one imagine door without
hinges? Of course not as they are the main ingredients to fasten the
door. Door Hinges have been used by the humans since 4000 years
and have passed many phase of evolution. It is believed that around
1600B.C hinges began to be used. Before the discovery of hinges people
used to safeguard their homes from intruders and from the harshness of
the weather by putting the heavy wood or stone on the entrance. Not to
speak about the hardship they must be facing for removing and installing
the heavier wooden or stone slab on the entrance.
In the ancient Eastern capital the earliest form of Door hinges
began to be used. However the hinges were not used by the common
population at this time. The hinges were mainly used in public or sacred
buildings.
In the period between 7th century B.C to 1st century A.D the Egyptian,
Babylonians and Assyrians were using hinges. The hinges used during this
time were crude in design and technology. The hinges used by Romans were
superior both in design and technology. Romans designed the hinge system
not only for huge entrance doors but also for small household items such
as cabinets, doors, drawers etc. The hinges played vital role in Romans
life. They had even hinge goddess which they called as Cardea In 16th
and 17th century hinges saw more advancement both in style and
technology. Now different materials were used for creating hinges. The
use of hinges made easier to operate everyday appliances. 19th century
saw the major developments in the field of hinges.
Between 1850 to 1900 different types of hinges like T-Hinge, Ball
Bearing Hinge, and Butt Hinge were discovered. In modern times
hinges have attained the perfection both in design and quality.
