Door Knob History
History of knob can be traced to the history of furniture. However during early periods the use of knobs was not so common. Long travels and the rough treatment to the furniture were perhaps the reasons that discouraged the use of the fixed projection. Earlier instead of knobs, drops or rings with little projection or simply keys were used . However later the knob started to gain popularity.

It was in the 18th century that knobs started to gain popularity. They were used either on small doors or cabinets. Knobs were usually made of brass and were attached using simple hand cut integral woodscrew.

In 19th century door knobs started to gain wider acceptance. These knobs were carved in decorative styles.

The manufacturing process was simple. Finer details and designs were first pressed on the thin sheet of the brass. This sheet was later spun onto a heavier body of solid brass. As the time passed knobs of different materials were also tried. Knobs were designed both individually and were also integrated with other door hardwares. For example door knobs were designed with back plates, locks etc.

The material finishes were also tried on these knobs to enhance their looks and strengths. Finishes given on door knobs were- Polished brass, lacquered brass, bronze, oil rubbed, etc. In the modern era both the manufacturing process and designs have reached to the point of sophistication and perfection.
