Introduction
Door lock is basically a mechanical fastening device that can be used
on household doors, vehicles, etc. It restricts access to the house or
area enclosed. Door locks are usually released using keys. They are
exclusively meant for security and come with security strike plates and
handle. Door locks come with necessary screws that secure the strike to
the wall framing, not just to the door frame jamb. These locks are
designed for both interior and exterior doors.
Exterior entry locksets usually have a large, rectangular body that
slides into a mortise, which is a cavity carved into the edge of the
door meant for accepting the lock mechanism. Door locks hardware are
designed in such a way that they match with the building codes.
Materials
Used
Door locks are crafted out of durable and strong metals. Some of the
materials used include:
- Stainless Steel
- Brass
- Wrought Iron
- Bronze
The extent of security provided by a lockset depends largely on its
construction. Any type of lock with only one key in the knob or handle
is partially secure and a burglar can easily temper it. In order to
ensure better security, a deadbolt needs to be installed with at least a
one-inch throw, i.e., it should extend a minimum of one inch beyond the
door's edge and should be made of case-hardened steel.
Types of Door Lock
Selection of Door Lock
- While selecting a door lock, one has to confirm the type of lock
required by the local building code.
- The attachment of security strike plate to the door frame or
entire door is a very important point to be considered while buying
door locks.
- To protect the house form burglars, security deadbolt locks needs
to be installed.
- Locks with key control should always be selected for doors.
- In order to analyse the security and durability of door locks,
locks with ANSI grade classification should be chosen. ANSI stands
for American National Standards Institute (ANSI) that is usually
maintained by hardware manufacturer associations.
- Door locks with saw-resistant bolts are also preferred for better
security.
