Hardware Glossary
Back Plate It is a small metallic piece with a concave portion, that are used for fastening certain types of cylinders to a door. Ball Bearing Hinge Ball bearing hinge consist of ball bearings between its knuckles to reduce friction. Barrel Bolt Having cylindrical shape, they are basically surface mounted slide bolt. Button Knob They are basically key-in-knob lock . They consist of either push or turn button. Biometrics system Biometric system utilizes the information specific to an individual's body to ensure a high degree of security.
Cam lock A locking bolt, in the form of a cylinder. Chain bolt Normally it is a spring based bolt that is operated an attached chain. Closed knob It is a knob that do not have any opening in its face. Cylinder lock It is a lock that is operated by a cylinder key. Deadbolt It is a lock that is operated by turning the key or knob without activation of a spring.
Double Cylinder: These are keyed cylinders placed inside and outside of an entry door that operate a deadbolt. They are perfect for use on glass entry doors. Deadlocking latch It is basically a latch bolt and follows deadlocking mechanism. Door knocker Installed on the exterior door, it allows people outside a house to alert their presence to the people inside. Dead Latch A latch that requires the door to be opened from both inside and out by key.
Entry Handle: This type of handle is mostly used for dummy doors and doors that do not latch. These handles are fixed on a large back plate. Entry Mortise Lock: It is a large mortise lock operated by knobs, levers or thumb latches. It is provided with either a modern keyed cylinder or a skeleton key operated deadbolt. Escutcheon: This is also known as keyhole cover, door plate or rosette. They are mainly decorative.
Finial: It is basically a decorative adornment on the top and bottom of a hinge knuckle or other hardware. It can also be used as an ornamental projection on the end of a curtain rod or pole. Flush Bolt: It is a bolt mortised into the edge of a door at the top and/or bottom. Flush bolt is usually used to hold the passive door, of a set of double doors, which are closed.
Half-mortise Hinge: It is a special type of hinge, wherein one leaf is mortised into the door jamb and the other is installed to the front end of the door. Holdback: It is an ornamentation used to hold drapery panels to the sides of the window when open. Hinge pin door stop These door stop's are designed in a way that enable enable them to slip over the existing bottom hinge pin of the door itself.
Interlocking bolt A bolt, when operated, interlocks with its strike.
Jamb Vertical components of the door that assist in locking and fastening the door.
Keyhole Cover: Also known as escutcheon, and is meant for decorating a keyhole in a door or piece of furniture. Kick Plate: It is type of plate that spans the bottom of a door, thereby protecting the wood on heavy traffic doors. Knob Shank: It is the cylindrical base of a door knob or lever which receives the spindle. Knuckle: It is a cylindrical structure located on the middle portion of a hinge where the two leaves come together and it also holds the hinge pin.
Latch Bolt: It is a part of a lock or latch which keeps the door closed when the door knob is released. Lift Off Hinge: It is special type of hinge that is provided with two knuckles and the pin is attached to one of the leaves. The hinge can be easily separated by lifting the leaf connected to the top knuckle, thus allowing the door to be lifted off in one step. Living Finish: It is a natural finish applied to hardware items that is not lacquered and intended to change over time. Oil Rubbed Bronze is an example of living finish on hardware. Lockset A complete lockset device that consist of locking device, complete with trim, mounting hardware and strike.
Mortise Strike: It is a casement latch, designed for windows that open out. The strike is mortised into the side of the window frame and the latch hooks in to it to keep the window shut. Mortise cylinder It is a threaded cylinder, that is used in mortise locks. Mortise latch Mortise latch consist of handle on either side, it simply acts like catch. It can be fitted both on the to internal and external door.
Non-mortise Hinge: This type of hinge generally has thin leaves. This allows them to be mounted on the edge of a cabinet door without having to be mortised.
Offset Cabinet Hinge: These are special hinges designed for cabinet or furniture doors. When these doors project out from the surface of the frame, offset hinge is surface mounted to the door and frame with an offset.
Pocket Door Pull: It is a type of flush escutcheon usually used for pocket or sliding doors. These door pulls have recessed portion, which allows the door to fit in the wall pocket and still be pulled open and shut. Plain Bearing Hinges They are mainly used on lower frequency doors. They are non-ball bearing hinges. Push key Padlock In this type of locks the shackle is released by full insertion of the key into the lock
Recess Window: It is a window set back into a wall. Curtain window treatments are mostly hung inside the recess. Rim Lock: It is basically a box type door lock, typically used for thin doors. The lock is usually mounted to the surface of the door. Rim Strike: It is designed for casement windows that open inwards. This type of strike is used when the sash is offset from the window frame. Rod: It is a an integral part of curtain hardware that holds curtain window treatments instead of a pole. They are usually made of metals.
Sash Lock: It is a turn lock that is used to prevent the window from being opened. The lock mounts to the top of the bottom sash and locks into the catch that is attached to the bottom of the top sash. Sconce: It is a wall-mounted curtain fixture that is mainly decorative and is ideal for draping curtains through. Screen Door Hinge: It is a surface mounted door hinge that works with spring tension to keep the door swing shut. Spring-Tension Rod: These are adjustable curtain rods provided with internal springs that helps in adjusting the rod. The rod easily fits inside the window frame. Strike Plate: It is a plate with cutouts that mounts to the door jamb into which the latch and dead bolt are trapped to either lock or latch a door. Strap Hinge: It is actually a long surface mounted hinge designed for use on doors and shutters. Surface Bolt: This type of bolt is mounted to the door or window surface and locks into a strike plate on the door jamb or window frame to keep the door or window closed. These bolts are usually made of metals like brass and iron. Surface Strike: These strikes are used for a pair of double casement windows that open in or out. Sliding latches They are designed for sliding doors. Slide bolts They help in fastening the door by pushing the the bolts up or down. They can be installed both at the top and the bottom of the door.
Thumblatch: It is actually an entry door set that has lever above the handle, which when depressed by the thumb unlatches the door. T-Hinges Resembling the letter "T" they can be used on doors, gates and cabinet lids. They consist of two constituents - vertical strap and horizontal strap.
Valance: It refers to a top window treatment that can stand alone or can be mounted over curtains. |
