Door latch installation is not so difficult. What is needed is complete set of tools. Door latches are of different types and come in different configuration. Common types of latches that are popularly used are: Spring Latch, Compression latch, Dead Latch, Rim latch, Mortise Latch etc. Latches attached with mortise plate is more common and while installing them you have to make only few preparations.

The tools that are required for the installation of the mortise lock are Screw Driver, Chisel, Hammer, and pencil. First mark on the edge of the door the spot where you have to install the latch. Now place the latch on the edge of the door. Mark the position where you have to chisel. So that the mortise plate fits nice and flush on the surface. The flushing of the mortise plate is necessary to allow the door to shut correctly. This will also good for the overall finishing of the door and the latch.

Once the location is marked, clean out the center with a chisel. First chisel the perimeter of the area. Now the area that is to be removed, is in front of you. For better result, always use sharpened chisel.

Now get ready to remove the interior of the perimeter with the chisel. After the removal of the materials from the area in which you are intending to install the latch, check that the chiseled depth is accurate. You may have to repeat this exercise several times.

After you are sure that the chiseled depth is right, and you are satisfied that the mortise plate will fit nicely, get ready for installing the latch. While installing always be sure that the curvature of the end of the latch is placed correctly. The correct placement of the curvature will ensure that the curved part strikes the jamb properly. Once the latch is place secure them tightly with the screws using screwdriver.
