Introduction
Locks and keepers are primarily meant for security purposes. They are
installed in windows for better internal security of the house. Locks
are usually attached with the handle of the window. There is a spring in
the window locks that facilitates the locking mechanism. There are some
locks that are compatible with specific keepers. This produces accurate
connection between the lock and the keeper.
Materials Used
Locks and keepers are usually constructed of corrosion resistant and
die cast metals. Some of the common materials used include:
- Brass
- Iron
- Steel
- Aluminium
Window Locks and keepers are given electrostatically applied durable
coatings that offer excellent resistance to chipping, scratching and
corrosion. Apart from this, bronze finish, white finish, polished brass
finish and zinc finishes are available with window locks and keepers.
Types of Window Locks
Sash
Window Locks: The Sash Window locks are basically cam-type sash
locks that are suitable for wooden double hung windows. These locks
operate with a spring action cam. The lockset comes with locks, keepers
and installation screws. The base of the lock support the standard
window frame.
Apart from the sash locks, there are yet three varieties of window
locks available:
snug fit latch, hook latch and
blade.
Each of these types have different throw and height dimensions.
Installation Guide
Proper installation of window locks and keepers is essential. Following
points should be considered while installing locks and keepers:
- For precise hardware placement in vinyl or metal window
applications, pre-drilling of the window profile is desired.
- In case of vinyl windows, mounting screws should pass through two
PVC walls or one PVC wall and one insert wall. Hence, use of a
longer screw is recommended.
- In case of application with metal windows, stainless steel
machine screws should be used. Stainless steel sheet metal screws
offer accurate holding power.
- In cases when two locks are installed on one window, the position
of each lock, with respect to its keeper should be accurate.
- Proper care should be taken for maintaining a continuous
weather-seal on all sides of the window.
- It should be assured that there is a proper connection between
the lock and the keeper.
